Tip of the Month
Importing graphics in Adobe InDesign
You can drag and drop graphics into your InDesign file, which is really
easy and a great feature-unless you want to control the quality of your
graphics! You can't specify import options using the drag and drop
method and the quality of the graphics may be compromised.
You can also copy and paste graphics in InDesign, but these images won't show up in the Links palette because they're embedded. Embedding images increases the InDesign document's file size and makes it cumbersome and prone to errors.
Always use the Place command to import graphics. This allows you to select the Show Import Options checkbox, which enables the Image Import Options dialog box. If you import a PDF, this allows you to select specific pages, crop out areas, and more. If you import a TIFF, it gives you image- and color-setting options.
Full color printing on the Heidelberg Direct Imaging Press
In 4 color process printing, all colors are produced using a combination of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black ink.
Design your files using process color versus spot or Pantone color. Bright, colorful, varied designs are the
strengths of this technology; photographs are reproduced with vibrant, pleasing color. We can show you samples of
files that work well for QMDI printing, please ask a customer service representative.
- Use “rich blacks” for black solids; Cyan: 25%, Magenta: 25%, Yellow: 25%, Black: 100%.
- Scan photographs at 300dpi, line-art at 1200dpi.
- Convert all images to CMYK. The color register is so tight on the QMDI that trapping is not an issue.
Proofing Options
You have two options for proofing color on the QMDI. The first is approximate but works well for the majority of
our clients. We output the final QMDI prepared file to a Xerox Docucolor using similar paper stocks. The Docucolor
is a toner-based laser printer which will give you a general idea of the final printed piece. Please note this is
not a “contract proof” and we will never match color exactly from this device to the QMDI. Again, the goal is
pleasing full color work and this proofing method is fast, easy, and has been extremely successful. If your work
is “color critical” we invite you to make an appointment with us to come in for a press check. You will see your
job running on the press as we begin and you will be able to approve your work before it runs. We see this as an
opportunity to share with you our commitment to quality, customer service and the latest in printing technology.
Most clients walk away with a whole new perspective of Poor Richard’s Press and we welcome the chance to show off
just how good we really are!
